Pug Skin Problems?

I have a 3 year old male pug who seems to have had skin problems since we got him. However, the skin in his groin area is darkening and though it doesn't appear to be causing any discomfort, I am not sure if there is a medical explanation for the discoloration or if it is just something that develops as they age. I plan on taking him in but I always like to look at the possible causes so that I may discuss them with his vet due to poor experiences with prior vets. Thanks
Pug Skin Problems?
My friend had an English Bulldog with a lot of skin problems, the vet thought it could be allergy to his food, but it turned out to be an overgrowth of yeast on his skin. Skin problems in dogs, especially pure breeds, are unfortunately pretty common. Hopefully your vet will find the cause.

the web site for the Pug Club will give you information on skin problems. in the blue area on left click pug health and then go down to skin. good luck
Reply:If it's just discolored skin, without hair loss, I don't think it's much to worry about. I'd still bring it up next time you're at the vet, but I wouldn't rush right in. Now if it's causing irritation, if it seems inflamed, etc I'd seek a vet's opinion right away.

If there IS hair loss with the discoloration, it could be several things. Flea or food allergies would be my first suspicions. Many dogs are allergic to corn, which is in almost all commercial dog foods. Other common allergens include wheat and other grains as well as certain meats/veggies (like people, one dog can be - or become - allergic to something that doesn't cause any problem at all in another dog). Fleas can cause excessive chewing and scratching in just about any animal... but if an animal is actually allergic, even ONE flea bite can cause pretty severe hair loss. Could also be some sort of mange. That sounds bad... but there are some types of mange that they are born with (demodectic mange) which is basically always THERE, but doesn't always flare up. My pug had this when I got him. He had some lines of hair missing around his face and chest. Nothing like you'd expect with mange... but yeah... many medicated flea dips later it returned to a "dormant" stage and hasn't flared up since.
Reply:Are you drying in between the folds of his skin after each bath and cleaning and drying them out regularly between baths? They are very susceptible to bacterial infections because of the moisture that gets trapped there.
